Harry Browne – RIP

Today’s newswire carried a story about Harry Browne passing away; he died from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

This is a huge loss for all of us that believe in small, Constitutionally-limited government. Harry was the face of the Libertarian Party for many years and was its national standard bearer in the 1996 and 2000 campaigns. I knew Harry, met him once or twice, and spoke with him several times on the phone. I also campaigned for him, donated money to his campaigns and, of course, proudly voted for him. He was a compelling speaker and a wonderful “preacher” of libertarian values. I think my favorite line of his was “Would you be willing to give up your favorite government program in exchange for ending the Income Tax?” Pithy and to the point. Another favorite; “Some people say the libertarian program to reduce the federal government goes too far; that it throws out the baby with the bathwater. But we have to remember – its Rosemary’s Baby.”

Though I’m no longer a card-carrying member of the Libertarian party, I was a founding member and sponsor of an organization he started, Downsize DC. Its target is the continued cancerous growth of our federal government, IMHO the single biggest threat we Americans face today; bigger than Al Qaeda, bird flu and “global warming”. Harry was a tireless fighter against this out-of-control growth and a real hero for many of us – he will be sorely missed.

Rest in Peace Harry, you have certainly earned it.
